August Is John Lee Hooker Month at the Delta Blues Museum

(CLARKSDALE, MS) – The month of August is just a couple of weeks away, and August is John Lee Hooker Month at the Delta Blues Museum here in Clarksdale, Mississippi!

Whatever your expectation about the blues, John Lee Hooker first denied it and then surpassed it. He was born on August 22 out near Vance, MS, probably in 1917. He left home when he was quite young to begin a remarkable journey where he never stopped playing the blues his entire life long. When he departed this earth, he was a man of substance beloved and honored by his family, fellow musicians, many, many friends and music lovers the whole world round. Each August, the Delta Blues Museum highlights his career as a blues hero who was renowned as the Healer.

In honor of John Lee Hooker, the Delta Blues Museum showcases several of John Lee Hooker’s guitars, including “Old Blondie,” one of his iconic hats, several of his 78 recordings and photographs of the man throughout his career.

A few of the events we have planned are:

• Friday, August 9th 7pm:  Delta Blues Museum Band performance at the Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival on the DBM stage. They will feature a couple of John Lee Hooker tunes in their set.

• Monday, August 19th 7:45 pm: Outdoor screening of The Blues Brothers movie which features an appearance by John Lee Hooker.

• Thursday, August 22 from 9am-5pm: John Lee Hooker’s Birthday celebration at the Delta Blues Museum with complimentary cupcakes (while they last)

• A John Lee Hooker scavenger hunt will also be offered to visitors throughout the month of August.
